In Final Fantasy X, the Overdrive ability unleashes massive damage and if you can get up the status bar fast enough. Most times, people have enough of a bar to make it 1 per boss fight and keep slowly winding down and then spend a huge amount of time between boss fights getting up the bar again.

Stoic
This mode is automatically set to every player. For this mode, it charges only when you take damage.
Warrior
It charges when a character attacks the enemy in anyway.

Healer
It charges when a character heals others for the amount healed.
