Pokémon – Types and understanding your edge in battle.

Types can be a tricky thing to master.. Art by Rytellia

Pokemon is a simple game. Catch all the Pokémon, battle all the trainers, breed/catch all the shiny versions, master the legendary gods of the world. Pretty basic. In order to get through the games seamlessly, one must understand the types of their Pokémon and what has bigger advantages over what.

Quick note. I’m one who enjoys graphics, but I absolutely hate these massive graphs you have to zoom into to find your one encounter. With that? I’m going to make smaller individual images to put into here to go over all of the match ups. Now, lets get to it!

Pokemon Types

Every Pokémon has their own affinity to a type, same with every move that they can perform. If a fire type Pokémon uses a fire type move, it will be more effective than if a fairy type Pokémon uses a fire type move. That being said, a weakness is a weakness. If you have a move that does not match your type, but is a weakness to an opponent you’re battling? You then have a major advantage, especially if they’re type is super effective to you.

  • Super Effective = 2x damage
  • Effective = 1x damage
  • Not very Effective = .5x damage
  • No effect = 0 damage

Here I’ll start with the individual types of Pokémon and what is super effective, not very effective, and if they have anything that will not effect them at all from the attacking point of view.

Multiple Types

Multiple types can be a maker or breaker in terms of battling. A type that’s super weak to a type of move can become not only resistant, but immune to that same type with a secondary type.

Most every way I’ve seen this shown is in even more confusing graphs and takes a ton of searching and can be even more confusing than it started.

Due to the amount of information in this section and the messy nature, I am currently working on a way that is not only quick and easy to read, but they’re not quite ready. I will be updating this as soon as I have them per type. Stay tuned!
